What is Blepharoplasty ?

Blepharoplasty Surgery commonly known as eye surgery, is a procedure for correcting the droopy eyelids and removal of excess skin, muscle or fat.

Procedure

With the excision and the removal or the repositioning (or both) of excess tissues, such as and fat, and the reinforcement of the corresponding muscle and tendon tissues, the blepharoplasty procedure resolves functional and cosmetic problems of the peri-orbita, (the area from the eyebrow to the upper portion of the cheek).

Furthermore, surgery to the lower lid consists of tightening of any excess or lax . This results in producing a more youthful appearance to the upper and lower eyelid. It aims to ‘freshen’ the tired eye look.

An upper blepharoplasty procedure usually is performed through external surgical incisions made along the natural lines (creases) of the upper and the lower eyelids, which creases then hide the surgical scars from view, especially when effected in the creases below the eyelashes of the lower eyelid.

This consists of removal of a crescent of and the underlying fat from the upper eyelid. The incision is planned for the final scar to fall into the natural crease (supra-tarsal crease) that classically lies 10mm above the lash line.

Some excess muscle (orbicularis oculi) may also be removed.

Patients will also have excess fat removed from the fat pads of the upper eyelid should that be required.

2.Lower Eyelid Surgery

The is incised and lifted away from the underlying muscle to allow excess fat to be removed. At the same time, a muscular sling can be used to re-suspend the eyelid.

A canthoplasty may also be performed which involves tightening of the outer corner of the eye, strengthening the lower eyelid tone. This produces a more youthful appearance, to both the lower eyelid as well as the upper cheek region which can reverse many of the changes of ageing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most blepharoplasty surgeries are performed for cosmetic reasons. As a result, people look better, are more open and sociable, and their vision improves if excess eyelid skin has been obstructing their vision (dermatochalasis). Excessive skin or fat on the upper eyelid can cause people a lot of discomfort, including the inability to look well or a tired appearance. In addition to removing excess fat, blepharoplasty also eliminates all the other cosmetic and functional discomforts related to that extra fat.

The surgery lasts for an hour, at most.

Immediately after surgery, the results are visible. For better results, one has to wait for one or two weeks until swelling and bruising subside. After the redness around the eye subsides, the final results will become evident in about 2 months
